MGM classic focusing on the intertwining lives of the inhabitants of a Berlin hotel. A lonely ballerina (Greta Garbo) contemplates suicide; a ruthless industrialist (Wallace Beery) makes a last ditch attempt to save his company; a fallen aristocrat (John Barrymore) resorts to thievery; an ambitious young woman (Joan Crawford) is about to trade her virtue for success; and a terminally-ill clerk (Lionel Barrymore) has a final fling. All five residents are unaware that their lives are about to change dramatically. The film won an Oscar for Best Picture.

"Mensen komen. Mensen gaan. Er gebeurt nooit eens iets," merkt een gast van het meest chique hotel van Berlijn op. Maar het bioscooppubliek destijds wist wel beter. Ze waren de bevoorrechte getuigen van het glorieuze doen en laten van een legertje supersterren, aangekondigd als "de sterkste cast in de geschiedenis van de film en het toneel". De berooide aristocraat John Barrymore. De dodelijk zieke klerk Lionel Barrymore. De nietsontziende tycoon Wallace Beery. De konkelfoezende stenografe Joan Crawford. En de gedesillusioneerde ballerina Greta Garbo. Het geniale idee om grote sterren samen te brengen in een film met vakkundig dooreengevlochten verhaallijnen bleek een meesterzet en luidde zelfs een trend in. Deze schitterende ensemblefilm kaapte in 1932 de Oscar voor Beste Film weg en blijft, vele decennia later, een tijdloos voorbeeld van glamour stijl en Hollywood op z'n best.
