Ergens ver weg op de steppe van Centraal Rusland, zorgt een zoon (Aleksej Ananisjnov) liefdevol voor zijn stervende moeder (Gudrun Geyer). Ze hebben alleen elkaar nog. Veel woorden spreken zij niet maar, omringd door de geluiden van de natuur, spreekt hun stilte van een diepe wederzijdse affectie. Terwijl moeder wegzakt in haar slaap waakt de zoon aan haar zijde in de laatste uren die haar resten op aarde.

A moody tale, set in a stone cottage on an uninhabited countryside, of the dedication and love that exists between a Mother and her Son. They recall times past as the woman attempts to hide the fact that she's dying, although well aware that the boy will soon be left alone in this isolated land. Moving spiritual images aid in the contemplation of life, death, and devotion.
