Voor zijn verfilming van het leven van Jezus van Nazareth ging Pier Paolo Pasolini uitsluitend uit van het eerste Evangelieboek, dat van Mattheüs: niets werd toegevoegd, alle gesproken teksten zijn letterlijke citaten.

In tegenstelling tot de bombastische Hollywood-bijbelfilms uit de jaren ’50 en ’60 streefde Pasolini een eenvoudige, pure en poëtische stijl na. Hij liet een aan het volk toebehorende Christus zien, een Christus van de armen, strijdbaar en sociaal geëngageerd. De locaties vond hij in het arme zuiden van Italië. Alle acteurs (waaronder zijn moeder, die Maria op latere leeftijd speelt) zijn amateurs. Met deze film leverde Pasolini de meest zuivere en volgens velen de beste verfilming van het het leven van Christus af.
