The love life of Major Andrea Rossi-Colombotti (Marcello Mastroainni) is an unmitigated disaster. Consigned to a boring ceremonial job at the NATO, Andrea seeks women, adventure and thrills. However his desires are muddled to the extent that he can feel no attraction for any woman if it did not risk his life. His picaresque adventures across Europe lead him at first to Switzerland where he meets the sweet and vibrant Gigliola (Virna Lisi). Yet Andrea s drive leads him to more dangerous conquests - a lion tamer, an American general s wife and above all Thelma (Marissa Mell). She engages Andrea to murder her husband (played by director Marco Ferreri) so that they may start anew. Repulsed yet excited, Andrea willingly bites off more than he can chew.

Casanova '70 was made at the height of Marcello Mastroianni's stardom and displays his considerable comic touch and especially his willingness to poke fun at his 'Latin lover' image. Working with legendary screenwriters Tonino Guerra (Amarcord), Suso Cecchi d'Amico (The Bicycle Thief) as well as frequent collaborators Age & Scarpelli, Mario Monicelli fashions a highly entertaining comic romp.
