Parijs begin jaren 1900. De Duitser Jules en de Fransman Jim hebben een heel sterke vriendschapsband. Een foto van een standbeeld van een geheimzinnig glimlachende vrouw verblindt hen. Ze besluiten om naar Griekenland te gaan en dit standbeeld terug te vinden. Bij hun terugkeer in Parijs maken Jules en Jim kennis met Catherine, die dezelfde glimlach van het standbeeld heeft. Jules trouwt met Cathérine. De eerste wereldoorlog scheidt beide vrienden. Wanneer ze elkaar na de oorlog terug zien, beseft Cathérine dat zij van Jim is gaan houden.
